ExxonMobil + Milliken: Enhance Recycled Polypropylene to Meet Automotive Material Standards

The push to increase the use of recycled polypropylene (rPP) in automotive parts has led original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to focus on high-performance functional components. This shift has been accelerated by the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) directive in the EU.

OEMs require rPP compounds that meet stringent material demands for impact resistance across various temperatures and stiffness standards. Additionally, these compounds must be optimized for rapid injection molding cycles to manage costs effectively.

To address these needs, ExxonMobil and Milliken have developed trial formulations incorporating Milliken’s DeltaMax® performance modifiers and ExxonMobil’s Exact™ polyolefin elastomers (POE), designed to meet automotive performance and processing specifications.

NOVA + Milliken: Advancing WVTR Barrier Performance - Unlocking New Potentials in HDPE Applications

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) resins are widely used in various film applications due to their excellent mechanical properties and moisture barrier performance, which are vital in preserving the quality and extending the shelf life of food products. NOVA Chemicals recently developed SURPASS™ HPx267-AB, a high-performance resin that sets a new industry standard for moisture barrier performance. Collaborating with materials science expert Milliken & Company, the resin incorporates Milliken’s UltraGuard 2.0 solution, which increases barrier performance by roughly 20% over the current benchmark. This advancement highlights the importance of integrating molecular and additive technologies to unlock new material potentials. Attendees will gain insights into the development process of this new product as well as potential use cases, including recommendations for performance & cost optimization through blends and multilayer film incorporation.

Milliguard® AOX-1 | Amine-free and Low Emission Antioxidant for Comfort and Automotive Polyurethane Foam

In the changing and challenging regulatory landscape for PU additives, including antioxidants, Milliguard AOX1 technology offers a technology platform to protect polyols and flexible PU foams. Some other antioxidants, such as diphenylamine, are facing upcoming regulatory changes.

Our reactive, diphenylamine-free antioxidant is chemically bound in the PU polymer matrix and gives good scorch performance and protection against NOX and UVA.

It is non-emissive and meets stringent VOC regulations for automotive, like VDA 278.

Milliguard AOX1 can be used in two ways:

Upstream during the polyol production to improve polyol stabilization: as a prepared antioxidant blend, either separately in combination with a Hindered Phenol, like Irganox 1076.

Downstream as an extra additive during foam production to give enhanced foam quality.

The presentation shows the results of trials proving the good performance of Milliguard AOX1 technology
